Pathologists diagnose disease by examining tissue, blood, and other samples in the laboratory, guiding the care your other doctors provide.

It depends on your plan. HMO plans (including many Medicare Advantage HMOs) usually require a referral from your primary care provider; PPO plans usually don't. Check your plan documents or call the number on your insurance card.

Doctors contract with specific insurance networks, not entire insurance companies — and sometimes only at certain offices. Once you've found a few options here, check them in your insurer's online directory or call the member services number on your card, then confirm with the office when you book.
